Wikevent:Goals and non-goals

Wikevent is a project to create a free, complete, up-to-date, worldwide calendar of public events

Goals

Our major goals, in no particular order:

Create an online data source for all public events the organizers of which wish to publish far-and-wide.
Provide a resource for other calendar sites including (but certainly not limited to) Google Calendar, KDE's Hot new stuff for Kontact, Eventful, Evite, etc.
Provide a simple means to upload standard calendar files, so that event organizers may contribute as easily as possible.
Provide a simple means to download standard calendar files to be included in user's personal calendars.
Provide a platform for programmers who wish to write scripts to harvest events from the website of their favorite venue.

These are some specific non-goals; things people might think we want to do with Wikevent, but we don't:

Create an online telephone directory. There are lots of these already. We don't need to create an exhaustive list of all businesses in a given place, just the ones which host events.
Create a travel guide. There are already several excellent projects to do that.
Create a website for sending electronic invitations. There are plenty of these sorts of site around already. We are more interested in collecting event data which any and all "e-vite" site can use as source material. This will hopefully promote competition so that we can all find a really cool invite site which works for our own purposes.
Create a link farm. There's no reason to link to anything and everything under the sun. Each venue listed should have a link to its official home-page and each event to the artist/instructor/organizer, and that is all.
Create a web events guide. It's true that there are truly such things as web-only events these days. Great! We'll leave it for somebody else to create a guide.
Create a television guide. This wiki is about real-world events. Let's leave the TV wiki for somebody else to build (hint hint).
Create a work or personal schedule. Wikevent is not your personal date book and no one needs to know your upcoming shifts for the next week.
