General Questions

What is Wikevent

Wikevent is a project to create a worldwide, Free calendar of public events like concerts, lectures, parties, classes, sporting events, and every other sort of public event which you can think of. We're inspired directly by and indirectly so by Wikipedia.

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a collaborative website that grows or fails based on the community of contributors that help to keep the site running. A wiki can cover any array of topics from a travel guide, an encyclopedia, religous information, a how-to guide, or foreign policy - even the U.S. Department of State has a wiki! The term wiki is a Hawaii word for "quick" and generally speaking a wiki is used to provide quick information on a topic.

What are your goals

Aside from world domination? We're looking to create the world's first and only global event calendar with a spin - that it's free for everyone to use and contributes to the open content culture.

Which software are you using?

We use the MediaWiki software, an open source program created for the Wikimedia Foundation, the people that run Wikipedia. MediaWiki is a great software, but doesn't accomodate all of our needs so we've needed to make a few minor changes to improve usability.

Who owns the website?

Mark Jaroski, the founder of Wikevent, owns the domain for Wikevent. Since we use a Creative Commons-by license anyone who contributes to Wikevent owns the content they submit or alter, but that content is licensed under the CC-by 2.5 license.

Questions about content

I'm trying to find the schedule for X, but there's no article!

We're a very new project and unfortunately we haven't even begun to think about some topics, but you can change that by plunging forward or adding a request for an article.

I just looked at the schedule for X and the only thing on the page is "Joan of Arc has a big bum."

That's vandalism, but at least it's truthful vandalism. Please delete the vandalism and if you have any relevant information please plunge forward and add some content.

I want to add the tour schedule X/lecture at X/the concert line up for Club X

Check out how to add an event.

I own a bar/concert hall/theatre can I add my line up?

Of course! Read our how to add an event tutorial for directions.

My church regularly hosts public events can we add the information?

Sure! Wikevent isn't solely for providing a calendar of events for clubs, bars, or concerts.

Can I write an article about Spinacia oleracea?

We'd prefer that you didn't because there are other wikis available like Wikipedia or Citizendium that offer an encyclopedic platform vision. Our vision has been fine grained to focus on cataloging events around the globe.

What about a travel guide to New York City?

Being a travel guide is not one of Wikevent's goals. We'd suggest that you look into contributing to Wikitravel, World66, or even World Wikia.

Questions about editing

How do I delete a page?

Only sysops can permanently delete a page. If you think a page should be deleted be check the deletion policy and add it to the votes for deletion page. Alternatively, you can blank a page and start editing it again.

Do I use HTML or another acronym to edit?

HTML is not required because we use what's called Wiki markup. Wiki markup is a simplified version of HTML. While it is possible to use HTML, using it is strongly discouraged.

Who is the presenter?

From time to time the question arises who is the presenter? Typically this means anyone who is doing the presenting. He believe Joseph Beuys' quote "Every human being is an artist" goes for artists/presenters on Wikevent, meaning the only anyone that performs or organizes is the artist/presenter. Typically, we do not extend the title of presenter to a place that is hosting the presenter.
